Doncaster Year 4 Basketball Tournament

A mixed squad of five boys and five girls from year 4 took part in the Basketball Tournament held at Outwood Academy, in the second week back of the term. The team played many other schools in very active and fast moving games, scoring some splendid baskets with accurate shots. The school team came 4th overall. Well done to the year 4 pupils.

Football Association Skills Programme (Ssponsored by Lidl)

The pupils of year 1 and 2 have benefitted from a course of weekly football related activities run by the Football Association with sponsorship this year by Lidl. As the programme was really enjoyed by the pupils and was successful, he returned to take all the girls in year 3 as part of ‘This Girl Can’ football programme, promoted by the Football Association, to promote sport amongst girls. The Y3 girls have really enjoyed the activites.

Year 4,5 and 6 Dodgeball games against Bessacarr (home games)

Mixed teams played against Bessacarr, played with great determination. All the pupils played exceptionally well and enjoyed the participation.

Netball game against Ranby House School.

A team of Y4 mixed boys and girls played netball against Ranby House School on a very mild and sunny day January. A very active game was played after a joint training/coaching session, the pupils learning about netball positions. This was followed by a sumptuous tea provided by the hosts!!

Year 4 and 5 games against Sunnyfield School.

A mixed team of year 4 and 5 pupils, along with a team from Bessacarr, played basketball against the recently formed Sunnyfield School Basketball Team. The schools played each other twice, with Southfield winning the most games.

These games were an opening to later friendly football matches in the following weeks, with a mixed year 5 team playing the first football match and the second, a week later with a boys’ year 4 team.

Tag Rugby Competitions.

A joint team of talented boys from both Bessacarr and Southfield competed in the Danum Shield Y6 Boys Tag Rugby Competition, held this year at Kingfisher School. The joint team played very active games. After the number of tries scored was taken into account to award placement, the team, who came in equal second on ‘points awarded per game’ were awarded third place overall, with a difference of only one try between all the top places. Well done to the talented Y6 boys of Nathan, Jacob, Rhys and Toby, who all successfully scored tries in each game.

At Wheatley Hills Rugby Tournament for the Doncaster Cup the Southfield team came 5th out of twelve school teams taking part. The rules of this competition are for a team with at least two girl players per game and our girls’, Ruby Eccles, Connie Boyd and Lexi O’Donnell played splendidly with full participation. (As did the boys) In all games the school team scored many tries and two matches were lost by one try on the closing whistle. Congratulations to Nathan Matthews, who was one of four players on the day chosen by the referees, as being ‘an outstanding player’ being awarded a medal for his achievement.

Bike It Activities.

Tom Collister (Doncaster’s Bike It Officer) has been into school working with F2 children on a ‘Get Off Stabilisers Day’ were two sessions-morning and afternoon were fully booked, with most children by the end of the session no longer needing stabilisers, whilst the others were very close to achieving it.

Southfield Football Tournament Year 5/6 Boys’ and Girls’.

The school again hosted the annual football tournament which brought in twelve separate boys’ and girls’ school teams from across Doncaster. Southfield girls’ team won the girls’ competition, playing each school twice, winning the shield, soon to be engraved. Well done girls. The boys had a challenging competition but equally did their best, participating to the full.

We are grateful to the referees from Armthorpe Wolves, who greatly helped in the efficient organisation of the competition. (A boys’ team from Warmsworth won the tournament, the first time they had travelled across Doncaster and partaken in our competition)

Doncaster Rovers Keepmoat Y4 Football Competition Six aside

A boys’ team took part competing against many other Doncaster schools. Though not winning through to the last four schools they participated showing excellent skills and thoroughly enjoyed further friendly games against Bessacarr and also a boys v girls game-between a team of six boys and a full squad of girls!

Townfield’s Cross- Country Races

Four teams of pupils, five boys and five girls from year 4 and year 5/6 took part in the cross-country running races on town field. All participants completed the course on a very warm day. In the proceeding weeks competitive trials had been held to find five pupils for each team. It was noticeable that many children tried their ‘best effort’ to make the team and showed their talent and determination in the trials, which is commended.

Overall, Southfield came 3rd out of ten schools. In every top ten positions there was always someone from Southfield. Each race had 40+ competitors and all Southfield pupils completed the course. The girls’ Y5/6 team came first and won a shield, with Jessica Ellis winning and Connie Boyd in second place. The boys’ Y4 race was won by Luka Tomes, leading way ahead, within moments from the start. Congratulations to these pupils, who all received medals, and well done to all the other team members who all ran with great determination.

After these many events we are grateful to parents/carers for returning the ‘school orange team kit’ washed and dried promptly, as often a few days later it is used again for the next event. Also to those who have transported their child to or from the venues. Thank you.
