The Thrive Approach

What does it take to develop healthy, happy, confident children who are ready and open to learning? Recent advances in neuroscience, attachment theory and child development have provided some of the answers to this question.

The Thrive Approach draws on insights from these fields to provide a powerful way of working with children and young people that supports optimal social and emotional development. In particular, the Approach equips you to work in a targeted way with children and young people who have struggled with difficult life events to help them re-engage with life and learning.

The Huddle

 The Huddle is a safe, warm comforting environment where learning mentors complete Thrive activities. The Huddle has been designed to meet the needs of all children who have a gap in their social and emotional development and need extra support.

As well as carrying out activities in the Huddle there are also a range of sensory equipment that can be beneficial in calming and soothing children.



 We all want the children in our school to flourish, so we have introduced The Thrive Approach in order to support their emotional and social development.

Our aim is to make your children feel happy and secure, be able to enjoy friendships, relate well to others and be ready and able to learn.


Thrive is a specific way of working with children that helps to develop their social and emotional well being, enabling them to engage with life and learning. It can also address any troubled behaviours providing a firm foundation for academic attainment.


Positive relationships are at the heart of Thrive. We use these relationships, together with play and creative activities, to give children key experiences at each stage of their development. Repetition of these activities supports their development, helping them to:


  • Learn to think before behaving in a certain way
  • Learn to recognise and regulate their feelings
  • Increase their self esteem and confidence to learn
  • Increase their emotional well being
  • Increase their sense of security and trust
  • Feel good about themselves and know that they matter
  • Enable them to be creative and curious

Introducing Southfield’s Learning Mentor

Hello, I am Bridget Burkill your Learning Mentor at Southfield Primary School.

I am a qualified Thrive practitioner   In the past, I have been a Teaching Assistant for several years and really enjoy working alongside the children at Southfield.

I am available if you would like to speak to me Mon – Fri from 8.40 to 15.00, or alternatively you can contact me through my email. Please do not hesitate in contacting me with any questions or concerns regarding your child.



Learning Mentor

My role as a mentor is to ensure that children engage fully with their learning and overcome any barriers which may exist. In any one day I may be helping children with their learning, with friendship issues, anger management issues, liaising with teachers and supporting behaviour management strategies.


Areas within school that I focus on:


  • Bereavement and loss
  • Supporting children in school to meet their needs and help them develop ‘to be the best that they can be’
  • Setting realistic targets, in order to encourage children to re-engage in effective learning
  • Raising achievements
  • Raising aspirations
  • Motivation
  • Managing emotions
  • Supporting learning in class and one to one.
  • Bullying
  • Feeling vulnerable
  • Friendship difficulties  
  • Self esteem and confidence building
  • Social skills


If your child is referred for support you will be contacted, as it is important that we have good home – school communication. The value of positive and active involvement of parents/carers cannot be overstated.

In most cases the staff in school will identify children who need support, but if you as a parent/carer have any concerns please do not hesitate to contact the school.
